Wandering Marionettes Kabinet Theatre TONIGHT!

by deadstalet
I know what you’re thinking. Geez, this sounds a lot like that Laura Branigan “Self Control” video. I need to buy a ticket to that dark, sexy shit A.S.A.P.
We know you do. And that’s why deadstarlet is setting the space-time coordinates to her teleportation device for Boardners in Hollywood tonight – where the deliciously dramatic and dark Wandering Marionettes will be performing their Kabinet Theater once again.

Dia De Los Muertos @ the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this Saturday

by deadstarlet
Known for resurrecting dead and buried stars and starlets during their summer film screenings, the Hollywood Forever Cememery is also in the business of resurrecting the rest of us stiffs. Well, at least this Saturday they are.
In only a production worthy of it’s Hollywood location, the Cemetery’s Dia De Los Muertos features dramatic processions, vibrant cultural performances, musical productions, elaborate costumes and an altar contest. Yes, an altar contest. Because the dead like their altars and their trendy Hollywood parties.

Okay, so the plot kind of sounds like a cross between Death Becomes Her and a Romero flick. And maybe the colors are too bright for some of our gothier Halloween sensibilities, but according to the event’s website: The Day of the Dead is an ancient and enduring ritual when the living commune with the dead – a mystical night when the veil is lifted between their two realms and they may share a day together.
Hello Kitty Exhibit and Party Meow-Off @ ROYAL/T

Leave it to Culver City’s adorably naughty Japanese-style cosplay café, ROYAL/T, to be the first North American venue to purr like a kitty.
The “Three Apples” Exhibition: Celebrating 35 Years of Hello Kitty will meow-off this FRIDAY, Oct. 23rd. That’s right; Hello Kitty is a Gen-Xer. And like any good Gen-Xer, she knows how to throw a birthday party.
Curated by JapanLA, 80 artists will take on Hello Kitty in everything from paint to fiberglass to a super secret interactive theme park. The proceeds made by the artists’ work will go to the charity L.A. Works.
Sweet Potato Fries, Free Music, Art: Vegan Mused at Cafe Muse

Photos courtesy of Lisa Bevis
Tucked away in Hollywood’s Theater Row, this quaint cafe, art gallery
and music venue is an L.A. vegan treasure. With playhouses right
outside it’s doorstep and an art gallery to boot, you can muse your
tummy while you muse your Bohemian mind. Oh, how Kawaii Chibi Kat
loves her Cafe Muse.
I can’t recommend just one dish; I adore them all. I haven’t tried
something and not liked it, although I do think their veggie burger
and yummy sweet potato fries with a side of Texas tangy BBQ sauce are all to-die-for. Going on their 2 year anniversary you’ll spot the owners Jennifer and Crystal at the register taking your order, how personal ^_^!
Eating Lidia’s Pupusas

photos by AWOL (Always West of Lincoln)
Lidia’s Pupuseria may be one of those Venice Boardwalk 3′x3′ hole-in-the-walls, but two dollar bills and five minutes can be magically converted into a warm meat, bean, herb, and/or cheese-filled corn pancake covered in cabbage salad and hot sauce. And that makes this itsy-bitsy Pupuseria a regular A.W.O.L. haunt.

Two cash dollars can buy you a lot of grub. It’s the price of the chicken tamales, which are always ready on the spot and come wrapped in a corn husk. Or you can indulge with a plate of fried plantains with cream for the same price.
If the leftist politics of Venice inspire you to “spread the wealth around,” a full Salvadorean breakfast is five dollars, while the rich chicken soup and flagship “pollo encebollado” are both seven dollars.
The just-off-the-boardwalk location, lack of seating options, and somewhat confusing menu keeps many of the tourists at bay.

Free L.A.: Bev Hills Art Show this Weekend

This fall’s Affaire in the Gardens Art Show celebrates one of Los Angeles’ most precious and upscale resources: water. I guess they want to keep their professionally landscaped lawns that bright green color. And you should come and enjoy it. It’s FREE. And it’s certainly prettier than Chinatown.
For those of you that know the beauty of a community art show, Affaire in the Gardens shouldn’t be missed. The show features over 200 artists, a wine garden, live music, local cuisine, art demonstrations, local celebrities, art collectors, and the kind of chic sunshine and flora that only Beverly Hills can buy.
So, turn off your TiVo’s and spend your weekend outdoors for a change, rubbing elbows with Los Angeles’ richer, prettier half.

Best Place to get your Lowbrow Art On: La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Feliz
If you’re post-Pop and all Pop Surrealism (or your date is), may I suggest you take a gander at La Luz de Jesus Gallery’s latest show featuring artists John Puglisi and Mitch O’Connell (October 2nd-31st).
O’Connell, one of Chicago’s most treasured illustrators and well-know lowbrow artists, is all brand names and cheer as he perverts pop art with his cartoony and disturbingly cute style in his collection “Pre-engagement Ring.” He’s got Marilyn, Jane Mansfield and adorable woodland creatures. He’s even got a salt’n pepper shaker that resembles a dildo. Or maybe that’s just me.

La Luz is a hybrid between a historic, groundbreaking art gallery and eclectic gift shop, where you can buy anything from Alien action figures to special edition art books to sushi-themed shower curtains to an original Mark Ryden or Nathan Ota.
