The bookend to an awesome night.  Dusting off the Venice beach sand from Art Hause v1 was less of a bummer for New Berlin — it was more like change in plans. By plans, we mean something like a night out in Silverlake with an unlimited credit credit card and a designated driver. The proof is in the ones and zeros on the “Super Social” mixtape.

And he’s not leaving anyone out of the fun either. Throwing golden dancefloor high-fives every second, this tape will make you sweat your clothes off and leave you feeling good enough in the AM to shop for another outfit and sweat that one off all over again.

Lately I’ve been spending alot of my free time in and around Venice Beach. If you’ve never visited, it’s almost magnetic and at the same time very inspiring. This new mix was intended to be series of field recordings off the shoreline, capturing the sounds of children playing and cars passing by near the lapping waves and busy boardwalk — book ended by a few fun songs.

Soon it evolved away from being a dancey mix to something more introspective, mainly because I want to share these recordings with art galleries and storefronts. So there you have it, a compact 45 minute mix of chin-stroking electro pop, downtempo, idm, and shoegaze — perfect for pondering art, or doing yoga poses. Feel free to use it as you see fit.

Attention all aspiring filmmakers and film-appreciators!  Tomorrow is the last day of the Zero Film Festival in Los Angeles.  After Sunday the festival will be moving on to its second leg to take place in Brooklyn, NY, beginning on December 9th.  

This past Wednesday I visited  the Standard Hotel in DTLA for the opening party of the festival.  For $10 guests were welcomed to share in screenings of projected short-films and a performance by the chick-band Warpaint on the Standard Hotel’s rooftop. 

The location was prime for a party; if you’ve never been the tucked away rooftop lets you enjoy a full bar and table service, while you take in the scenic beauty of the rooftop pool and a panoramic view of the downtown LA skyline. 

Over the past 4 days Zero has showcased shorts and features created by artists with zero sponsorship.  It prides itself on being one of the last venues for these self-financed filmmakers to share their work.   If you’re interested in taking in some art films, or submitting for next year’s ZFF, visit http://www.zerofilmfest.com/

Are you one of those people who’s just sure you were born in the wrong era?  Are you a working woman who secretly wishes that you were at home ironing (shhh..I won’t tell if you won’t).  Well if these fantasies speak to you, you should indulge yourself in AMC’s Madmen, which is just what SassyCandy and I did this past Halloween. 

In order to find the gear to fill the bill, Miss SassyCandy and I headed out to some vintage shops around Melrose and Echo Park.  Two standout favorites were American Vintage and Flounce Vintage; both unique snowflakes in their own ways.

American Vintage is perfect for the gal who craves a little structure in her life, kind of like having a strong man around to tell you what to do.  Styles are sectioned off in racks identified by decade.

Flounce Vintage, the name itself a bit of a litmus test of vintage savvy, is more for the true vintage aficionado.  It’s a hole-in-the-wall shop with charm and knowledgeable classic-clothing experts.   They’ll answer your questions if you’re a debutante and even dig around in the expanses of their shop closet to find you just the outfit you’re looking for.  Some of their clothing was purchased through consignment, so you might find it a bit on the pricy side, but if you’re looking for true authenticity this is surely your place.  Plus the staff is happy to make you a deal to see to it that the clothing has not only a rich history but also a scintillating future.

Women’s roller derby has begun to skate along the line of mainstream with the recent slew of media attention it’s been receiving (Whip It, whip it good). But anyone who wants to argue that roller derby is a just  another passing fad might have a knuckle sandwich coming their way, served up by the delicious Derby Dolls.

Are you tired of going to Halloween parties  full of people who think they’re too cool to do the real monster mash? 

If your answer is ‘yes,’ dump your left-footed friends and head down to the LA Sports Arena on Halloween night. It’s time to find your glow sticks, suit up in spandex, and dance the night away with 65,000 of your closest friends. It’s the 12th annual Monster Massive — a frightfully fun night/early morning full of electronic music, light shows, and intricate costumes. The second biggest event in the raver calendar (topped only by the Electric Daisy Carnival in June), this year’s line up features the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Felix da Housecat, and Crystal Castles plus a host of other electronic djs to fill your dancing shoes’ needs.

Tickets are $70 (plus taxes- Ticketmaster always manages to get you where it hurts) but the ticket pays for the quality of the event. The LA Times has said, “If you’re curious about the electronic dance music experience, then Monster Massive maybe be your 100-beats-per-minute ticket.” $70 for an 100-beats-per-minute ticket? Sold.

When mulling over you Saturday night options, keep Monster Massive at the top of your list: it’s Halloween as you’ve never seen it before. Gear up, stretch it out, and get ready to thrown down with the rest of the ghosts, goblins, and ghouls.

 This past weekend, DeadStarlet and I attended the Hello Kitty Fan Appreciation Party at Royal/T — the meow-off event for the first ever North American Hello Kitty Exhibition …ever! A MUST for all those who claim to love HK.

The Appreciation Party is the first in a series of HK-themed events dubbed Three Apples, celebrating 35-years of feline cuteness. Don’t miss the HK Halloween Party this Saturday, October 31st (with pumpkin carving and costume contests and prizes). And Hello Kitty’s B-Day party on Sunday, Nov. 1st. If you didn’t snag a ticket in time for The Do LaB’s last L.A. Warehouse party, maybe you should buy your tickets earlier. Like now. Because if the Do LaB’s history of selling out the sickest parties in town weeks ahead of time is true, then you might already be too late.

On Thursday, November 12th @ the King King, the Do LaB is set to present Bluetech, Mimosa and Electric Dandelion.

(Postdated August 10, 2009) : What’s not to love when your friends throw a not-so-secret interior design party in Venice beach?  Our Tag Sale last weekend was a resounding success, with lots of rabid early shoppers and sunshine a plenty.  Much props to Vanessa De Vargas (Turquoise), Vanessa Kogevinas, and Amy Swift (SMARTY) for keeping the mood light, and of course thx to Dj Stephen R, and Haizee for joining me on the decks overlooking the crowd. The NYTimes even showed up and wrote a succulent expose.
